The Greatness of Our God

Sermon from cong readings in Psalm 139, Aug 27, 2006 – bk@kluth.org

1 - God knows everything about you

Ps 139:1-4 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.       Rom 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

2 - God watches over you

Ps 139:5-12 You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.  Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,

too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.  If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.   If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Gen 3:8-12  Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?"  He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."  And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?"   The man said, "The woman you put here with me--she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it."

3 - God created you

Ps 139:13-16  For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.  I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.  When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

your eyes saw my unformed body.

4 - God has plans for your life

Ps 139:16-18 All the days ordained for me were written in your book

before one of them came to be.  How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!  How vast is the sum of them!  Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake,

I am still with you.   Eph 2:10  We are God's workmanship (masterpiece) , created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

5 - God will examine you so He can lead you on the right path

Ps 139:23-24 Search me (penetrate, to examine intimately), O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious (divided, conflicted) thoughts. See if there is any offensive (idolatrous, wicked) way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Luke 9:47-48  Jesus, knowing their thoughts (when the disciples were arguing about who was the greatest), took a little child and had him stand beside him. Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all-he is the greatest."
