Being the Church Instead

of Just Going to Church – Part 1

Sermon from cong readings in Josh 1-4, June 24, 2007 – bk@kluth.org

Our ministry theme this year is Reaching beyond generations & walls

1 - Know what God wants to do and get on board

Josh 1:1-2 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' aide: "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready (in 3 days) to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them.”

Heb 12:1-2 Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus.

2 - Know the territory God wants to give you

Josh 1:3-5 I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates-all the Hittite country-to the Great Sea on the west.

1 Chron 4:10 Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, "Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." And God granted his request.

3 - Know that God is with you

Josh 1:5-7 As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.  "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be strong and very courageous.

Matt 28:19-20 (Jesus said to the disciples) “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

4 - Know God’s Word and follow it daily

Josh 1:7-8 Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

5 - Know about the scarlet thread

Josh 2:12-13,17-21 (Rahab from Jericho said to the he two Jewish spies) “Now swear to me by the LORD that you will be kind to me and my family since I have helped you. Give me some guarantee that when Jericho is conquered, you will let me live, along with my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all their families."…Before they left, the men told her, "We can guarantee your safety only if you leave this scarlet rope hanging from the window. And all your family members--your father, mother, brothers, and all your relatives--must be here inside the house…we swear that no one inside this house will be killed--not a hand will be laid on any of them…"I accept your terms," she replied. And she sent them on their way, leaving the scarlet rope hanging from the window.

Eph 2:13 Now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.

Col 1:13-14 (Jesus) has rescued us out of the darkness and gloom of Satan's kingdom and brought us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who bought our freedom with his blood and forgave us all our sins.TLB
