The Truth About The Holy Spirit

Sermon from cong readings in Acts 10-12, Sept 30, 2007 – bk@kluth.org

The Holy Spirit is given to believers

Acts 11:16-17 (Peter said) “Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?" Rom 8:15-16 You received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Romans 8:9 If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

The Holy Spirit fills believers

Acts 11:24 (Barnabas) was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.

Acts 13:52 The disciples were filled with joy & with the Holy Spirit.

Eph 5:18 Don't drink too much wine, for many evils lie along that path; be filled instead with the Holy Spirit and controlled by him.^TLB

1 Cor 3:16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?

The Holy Spirit guides us

John 16:8-9, 13 (Jesus said) “[The Holy Spirit] will convince the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world's sin is unbelief in me.” . . . “When the Holy Spirit, who is truth, comes, he shall guide you into all truth.”

Rom 8:5-9 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled (=led, guided) by the Spirit is life and peace . . . You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.

Gal 5:16-23 Live according to your new life in the Holy Spirit. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves…When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, your lives will produce these evil results: sexual immorality, impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, idolatry, participation in demonic activities, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, divisions, the feeling that everyone is wrong except those in your own little group, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other kinds of sin . . . But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.^NLT

The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts

1 Cor 12:4 Now God gives us many kinds of special abilities, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all.^TLB

1 Cor 12:29-31, 1 Cor 13:1-2 Does everyone have the power to do miracles? Can everyone heal the sick? Of course not. Does God give all of us the ability to speak in languages we've never learned? . . . No, but try your best to have the more important of these gifts . . . If I had the gift of being able to speak in other languages without learning them and could speak in every language there is in all of heaven and earth, but didn't love others, I would only be making noise.

The Holy Spirit helps us

Rom 8:26 The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.
