Living a Life of 5-Star Service

From congregational readings in Mark 9-13, April 20, ‘08 – bk@kluth.org

OUR VISION: Bring help and hope

as we develop fully devoted followers of Christ.

WE VALUE:  Consecrate yourself to Christian service

with your God-given time, abilities, gifts, and desires.

Mark 9:33-37 (Jesus asked the disciples) “What were you arguing about on the road?" But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.  Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all."  He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me."

Mark 10:42-45 (Jesus called his disciples and said) "You know that in this world kings are tyrants, and officials lord it over the people beneath them.   But among you it should be quite different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,  and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all.  For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many."

What is “ministry”?  Greek definition is “diakonos” = “to serve”.

Spiritual gifting

1 Cor 7:7  Each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.

1 Cor 12:4-7 Now there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service in the church, but it is the same Lord we are serving.  There are different ways God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work through all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church.

Energizing

Phil 2:13 It is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

Col 1:28-29 We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.

Rescues

Acts 9:36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which, when  translated, is Dorcas), who was always doing good and helping the poor.

Gal 6:9-10 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.       Gal 5:13 Serve one another in love.

Values

Ps 139:13-14 You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.  I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Eph 2:10 We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Experiences

Rom 8:28 We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

2 Cor 1:4 [God]comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
