Proverbs: Help for Getting GodŐs Wind Under Your Wings

From congregational readings in Proverbs 1-5, May 4, Ô08 – bk@kluth.org

Isa 40:29-31 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;

but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Prov 1:1-5  The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:  for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;

for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young--

let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.

1 - The winds of knowledge

= Information, opposite of being ignorant and unknowing.

Prov 1:7  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.

Prov 19:2  It is not good to have zeal without knowledge.

2 - The winds of understanding

= Intelligence, ability to think clearly, mentally sharp.

Dan 1:19-20 The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king's service. In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.

3 - The winds of learning

= Divine doctrine--what GodŐs Word reveals about any subject.

1 Tim 4:16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

4 - The winds of wisdom

= Good and godly sense, skillful, ability to apply knowledge, understanding, and learning to specific circumstances and situations.

1 Cor 1:24 Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

5 - The winds of discretion

= Witty, thoughtful, knowing how to wisely or graciously  respond.

Prov 11:22 Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.

1 Kings 3:24-27 The king said, "Bring me a sword." So they brought a sword for the king. He then gave an order: "Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other."  The woman whose son was alive was filled with compassion for her son and said to the king, "Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don't kill him!"  But the other said, "Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!"  Then the king gave his ruling: "Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother."

6 - The winds of discipline

= Correction, reproof, instructions, warnings, and chastisement that put you on a straight path.

Prov 12:15  The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.

Prov 16:25 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

7 - The winds of guidance

= Getting good advice, insights, wisdom, counsel to help direct you and steer you towards a straight path and good plan of action.

Prov 4:11 I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.
