The Shaping of A Godly

Woman or Man – Part 3

From congregational readings in Proverbs 21-25, Jun 1, 08 – bk@kluth.org

1 - Learn about relating to authorities

Prov 21:1, 25:15 The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases…Patience can persuade a prince, and soft speech can crush strong opposition.

Prov 22:29 Do you see a man skilled in his work?  He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.

Prov 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.

2 – Learn about marriage

Prov 21:9, 19 Better to live on a corner of the roof  than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.  Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered wife.

Eph 5:21-25 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.  Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord….Husbands, love your wives.

Col 3:18-19 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.   Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

3 - Learn about parenting

Prov 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

Prov 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.

Heb 12:11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

Eph 6:1-4 Children, obey your parents; this is the right thing to do because God has placed them in authority over you. Honor your father and mother. This is the first of God's Ten Commandments that ends with a promise. And this is the promise: that if you honor your father and mother, yours will be a long life, full of blessing.  And now a word to you parents. Don't keep on scolding and nagging your children, making them angry and resentful. Rather, bring them up with the loving discipline the Lord himself approves, with suggestions and godly advice.TLB

4 - Learn about alcohol

Prov 21:17, 23:20 He who loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and oil will never be rich…Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor.

Prov 23:29-33 Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints?  Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?  Those who linger over wine…In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper.  Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things.

Prov 31:4-5  Rulers should not crave liquor. For if they drink, they may forget their duties and be unable to give justice to those who are oppressed.NLT

Eph 5:18 Don't drink too much wine, for many evils lie along that path (NLT = because that will ruin your life); be filled instead with the Holy Spirit and controlled by him. TLB

5 - Learn about goals

Prov 21:6, 22:1 A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare…A good name is more desirable than great riches.

Prov 21:21 He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.

Prov 23:4-5 Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint.   Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.

2 Cor 5:9 We make it our goal to please [Christ].
