Christians Living Faithfully
Learning to Get Along In the Family of God
– Part 4
From congregational readings 1 Cor 16 - 2 Cor 3, July
20, 08 – bk@kluth.org
1 - Be faithful in giving
1
Cor 16:2-4
On the first day of every week, each one of you should
set
aside a
sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no
collections will have to be made. Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of
introduction to the men you approve and send them with your gift to Jerusalem.
Deut
14:22-23
Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine
and oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD
your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you
may learn
to revere the LORD your God always.
2 - Be faithful in
comforting others
2
Cor 1:3-4
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so
that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have
received from God.
2
Cor 1:8-10
We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered
in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability
to endure, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But
this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the
dead. He has delivered us from
such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us.
3 - Be faithful in praying
for others
2
Cor 1:10-11
On [God] we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you
help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious
favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
Acts
12:5
Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.
Acts
12:12-17 (After
an angel freed Peter from prison) he went to the house of Mary the mother of
John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. Peter knocked at the outer entrance,
and a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer the door. When she recognized
Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed,
"Peter is at the door!" "You're
out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so,
they said, "It must be his angel." But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and
saw him, they were astonished.
4 - Be faithful in sharing
your faith
2
Cor 2:14-16
Through what Christ has done, he has triumphed over us so that now wherever
we go he uses
us to tell others about the Lord and to spread the Gospel like a sweet perfume.
As far as God is concerned there is a sweet, wholesome fragrance in our lives.
It is the fragrance of Christ within us, an aroma to both the saved and the
unsaved all around us. To those who are not being saved, we seem a fearful
smell of death and doom, while to those who know Christ we are a life-giving
perfume.TLB
2
Cor 3:2-3
You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by
everybody. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our
ministry.
2
Cor 3:4-6, 12
We dare to say these good things about ourselves only because of our great
trust in God through Christ, that he will help us to be true to what we say, and not because we
think we can do anything of lasting value by ourselves. Our only power and
success comes from God. He is the one who has helped us tell others about his new agreement
to save them.TLBÉSince this new covenant
gives us such confidence, we can be very bold (confident, frank, honest,
direct).
