What To Do In Dry Times

From congregational readings in Psalm 84, Sept 7, 08 – bk@kluth.org

1 - Thirst for the living God

Ps 84:1-2 How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

Heb 11:6 Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

2 - Delight in the Word of God

Ps 1:1-3 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked

or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.  But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.  He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

Jer 17:5-8 Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD.  He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he will not see prosperity when it comes.  He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.   "But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.  He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.

It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.  It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."

3 - Focus on the destination of God

Ps 84:5-7 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.  As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools.   They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

2 Peter 3:13-14 We are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.   So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

John 3:3 Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."

4 - Get alone in the presence of God

Ps 84:10-12 Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere;

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

1 Sam 30:3-6  When David and his men came to Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep. David's two wives had been capturedÉDavid was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.

5 - Claim the promises of God

Ps 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.  O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you.

Ps 34:9-10 Fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing.  The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.
