What would
does Jesus do?
Sermon from cong. readings in Matt 12-15 - Nov 30, 08 bk@kluth.org
1 - Jesus helps people and heals
people
Matt
12:8-14 [Jesus] went into their synagogue,
and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse
Jesus, they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" He said to them, "If any of you has a
sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and
lift it out? How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is
lawful to do good on the Sabbath." Then said to the man,
"Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out and it was
completely restored, just as sound as the other. But the Pharisees went out and
plotted how they might kill Jesus.
Matt
15:30-31 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame,
the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet;
and he healed them. The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the
blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.
2 - Jesus sows seed and
sends people to their eternal destiny
Matt
13:36-43 His disciples came to [Jesus] and said,
"Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field." He answered, "The one who sowed the good
seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for
the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy
who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the
harvesters are angels. "As the
weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the
age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his
kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them
into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then
the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.
3 - Jesus cares about
people and multiplies provisions
Mt
14:14-20 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to
him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send
the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some
food." Jesus replied, "They do
not need to go away. You give them something to eat." "We have here only five loaves of bread
and two fish," they answered. "Bring them here to me," he said. And
he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the
two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he
gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all
ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken
pieces that were left over.
4 - Jesus calls men and
calms storms
Matt
14:22-33 Immediately
Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other
side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on
a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but
the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves
because the wind was against it.
During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went
out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the
lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out
in fear. But Jesus immediately said to
them: "Take courage! It is
